What is Regional Anesthesia?

if you are having an orthopedic, hand or podiatric procedure, you will very likely have a nerve block!

An Anesthesiologist specializes not only in General Anesthesia "putting to sleep" but also in injecting Local Anesthesia right next to the nerves in order to cause numbness and motor block to the extremities.

if you are having shoulder surgery, it is recommended that you have an "Interscalene Block": Blocks your whole shoulder and arm.

If you are having Hand Surgery, you will most likely have an "Axillary Block": Blocks the arm distal to the elbow.

If you are having a Carpal Tunnel or Short Hand Surgery Procedure, you will have an IV Regional Anesthesia

If you are having an ACL Reconstruction: you will have a Femoral Nerve Block

If you are having Ankle Surgery: you will have a Popliteal Block

If you are Having Foot Surgery: you will have an Ankle Block or a More Localized Block performed by your Foot surgeon.

why should I have a nerve block?

  1. you will have much better pain management
  2. you will require less general anesthesia
  3. you will have a lower risk of having nausea or vomiting
  4. you will be able to sleep better at night.
